CHURCH (Richard William, 1815-1890, from 1871 Dean of St Paul's)

Autograph Letter Signed to 'My dear Madam', saying he is "much flattered by your proposal" that he should undertake "a course of lectures for your association ...But my engagements put it out of the question for me", he can only express his regret that he cannot "take part in your important work", Whatley Rectory, Frome, 17th October

Church spent 1852-1871 as Rector of Whatley, a small village with 200 inhabitants. In 1845 he had been one of the two Proctors at Oxford who had vetoed the condemnation of Newman's Tract 90, and it was at Whatley in 1870 that Newman visited to talk over and confirm the details of that famous occasion. Church had remained well known to the public by his writings but refused offers of preferment till he accepted for St Paul's the following year.
