MÜNSTER (Count Georg Herbert zu, 1820-1902, German Ambassador to London, 1873-1885)

Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Douglas Murray, (Thomas, 1841-1911, of 34 Portland Place, barrister, amateur Egyptologist and friend of Whistler), saying he will "dine with you on Sunday with the greatest pleasure", 1 side 8vo, German Embassy, 9 Carlton House Terrace, S.W., 7th July no year, circa

Born in London, where his father was George IV's minister for Hanover, Georg Herbert was Hanover's ambassador to Russia, 1857-1865. He failed to persuade Georg V to be more friendly to Prussia, resulting in the disaster of 1866, when Georg V lost his kingdom following the German Civil War. Thereafter Mûnster was in the Prussian service. He represented Wilhelm II at the Hague Peace Conference of 1899. His second wife, 1865, was Lady Harriet Elizabeth St Clair Erskine, (d.1867), daughter of the 3rd Earl of Rosslyn.
