In the City of London, the old Sheriff Court was abolished in 1867 and the City of London Court took its place. The City's Common Council removed Osgood from his position as Registrar of the old Court and appointed Mr Nelson, the City Solicitor, to perform the corresponding duties in the new court, and Osgood v Nelson went all the way to the Lords (1872).
Westbury is best remembered for his still valid dictum that a company has neither a stern to be kicked nor a soul to be saved.
