Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs PAGET, (Clara, 1825-1899, née Fardell), wife, 1851, of Dr (later Sir) George Edward Paget, (1809-1892, of Gonville & Caius, Cambridge, from 1872 Regius Professor of Physic), saying "You were so kind as to invite me to dinner of Tuesday next and still kinder in allowing me to return a dubious answer", his friends are not now coming, so "if you have a place for me will you be good enough to let me know the dinner hour?", with a P.S., "pray treat me as an old friend, and tell me frankly if you don't find it convenient ...", 2 sides 8vo, [Cambridge], 20th May, year added in faint pencil

William George Clark had been under Benjamin Hall Kennedy at Shrewsbury and in 1850 helped edit, and contributed to, the delightful Latin and Greek versions in Sabrinae Corolla,('The Chaplet of the River Severn'). An acute scholar and a man of great charm, he also edited the Cambridge Shakespeare in 9 volumes, the best critical edition of the text for many years, and the 1-volume Globe Shakespeare.
