[VICTORIA (1819-1901, Queen of Great Britain)]

Printed Programme of Music following the State Banquet in honour of the Crown Prince of Sweden & Norway, (1858-1950, from 1907 King Gustaf V of Sweden), who was on an extended visit to Britain, with the British Royal Arms in full colours at the head, in a blind-embossed border of a trailing vine against a lace mesh, the music beginning with the Overture to William Tell with Monsieur [Oluf] Svendsen playing the flute obbligato, and followed by largely vocal items from Italian, German, French and English operas, sung by Mesdames Turolla, Scalchi, de Caters-Lablache and Etelka Gerster, (1855-1920, the Hungarian Soprano), by Signori Gayarre and Ciampi, and by Monsieur Lassalle and Mademoiselle Schou, conducted by W.G. Cusins (1833-1893, from 1870 Master of the Queen's Musick, knighted 1892), printed by Ortner & Houle, (Heraldic Engravers to the Queen), 3 St James's Street, S.W., 1 side 4to and conjugate blank, (The Saloon), Buckingham Palace, for Wednesday Evening, 16th July somewhat spotted in places, all except two in the decorative frame, a few other tiny defects in the frame, light creases from former early folding

"The band and chorus, consisting of upwards of 160 performers, were selected from the Italian Opera, the Philharmonic and Sacred Harmonic Societies, with Her Majesty's private band", (Times, 17th July 1879). Among them was the Norwegian flautist Oluf Svendsen, (1832-1888), who played with the chief orchestras in London, taught at the Royal Academy of Music, and from 1860 was a member of Queen Victoria's private band.
