Although the Queen and Princess Beatrice were still at Balmoral, this concert, which began shortly before 11 p.m., was one of the highlights of the season, London society, led by the Prince and Princess of Wales, having dined separately before assembling. Invitations were issued on a grand scale to the diplomatic corps, distinguished foreigners, the peerage, clergy, politicians, members of the armed forces and others. There were 160 performers, the Queen's private band assisted by members of the chief :London orchestras and choral societies.
Juliàn Gayarre
, (1844-1890), the Basque tenor, quite untrained till about 20, was one of the finest exponents of
bel canto
of the second half of the 19th century, as well as a fine Wagnerian.
