TYRWHITT (Rev. Richard St John, 1827-1895, Writer on Art, Friend of Ruskin)

Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs HUSSEY, (Elizabeth, née Ley, wife of Professor Robert Hussey, 1801-1856, Canon of Christ Church, Oxford), asking her to favour him "by sending back my sketches by the bearer as Ruskin & another friend are coming to see them? I can send them back if you like in a day or two", with on the verso a contemporary list of names, mostly crossed through, apparently dinner guests, the letter 1 side small 8vo, Christ Church, Oxford, Saturday 9th no year, circa small closed tear in blank left hand edge, traces barely visible of early childish lettering in pencil on top portion of recto, but an evocative item

John Ruskin, (1819-1900, the writer and critic), went up to Christ Church in 1837 and maintained his connection with Oxford all his life.
St John Tyrwhitt was his fervent admirer. He held a studentship at Christ Church, (1845-1858), and was vicar of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford, (1858-1872). In 1869 he withdrew his candidature for the Slade Professorship in favour of Ruskin. Ruskin contributed a preface to Tyrwhitt's Christian Art and Symbolism, 1872, and allowed Tyrwhitt to use woodcuts and text from his own Elements of Drawing in Our Sketching Club, 1875.
On the verso is a (mostly) numbered list, apparently of dinner guests, mostly crossed through.
1 Hobhouse - perhaps Edmund (1817-1904, Balliol, 1834, Bp of Nelson, NZ). 2 Ley. 3 Swabey. 4 Cameron. 5 Moody. 6 Paton. 7 Dr Teissier, - apparently Rev. Philip Antoine de, (Corpus, 1837, 1819-1891), from 1884 3rd Baron. 8 Metcalf. West. 9 Maule. 10 Chamberlain. 11 Haussmann. 12 Hales. Chase. Binsey.
