small closed tear in blank left hand edge, traces barely visible of early childish lettering in pencil on top portion of recto, but an evocative item
John Ruskin
, (1819-1900, the writer and critic), went up to Christ Church in 1837 and maintained his connection with Oxford all his life.
St John Tyrwhitt
was his fervent admirer. He held a studentship at Christ Church, (1845-1858), and was vicar of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford, (1858-1872). In 1869 he withdrew his candidature for the Slade Professorship in favour of Ruskin. Ruskin contributed a preface to Tyrwhitt's
Christian Art and Symbolism
, 1872, and allowed Tyrwhitt to use woodcuts and text from his own
