BLOCKADE RUNNER AND TURKISH ADMIRAL HOBART PASHA (Hon Augustus Charles Hobart-Hampden, 1822-1886, Admiral in the Turkish Service)

Autograph Letter Signed 'Hobart Pasha' to Thomas Douglas Murray, (1841-1911, Barrister, amateur Egyptologist and friend of Whistler), thanking him "for your kind souvenirs and good wishes", monogram AHH at head, 17 Berkeley Square, 1 side 8vo, Wednesday 7th April no year but 'regards' in subscription is faint, apparently originally so, elsewhere good

Retiring from the Royal Navy in 1862, Hobart's love of adventure led him to blockade-running in the American Civil War. He ran the blockade 18 times, taking armaments to Charleston and returning with a cargo of cotton. In 1867 he entered the Turkish service and was immediately made rear-admiral. In the war with Russia of 1877-1878 his fleet dominated the Black Sea and successfully blockaded the ports of South Russia and the mouths of the Danube.
