D'Arcy Niland had begun writing in his teens, but in the Great Depression turned to many jobs. After his marriage in 1942 to writer New Zealander Ruth Park, they travelled through the Australian outback, he shearing sheep and she as a cook. He gained fame worldwide with The Shiralee, the travels of a swagman with his four-year old daughter. Peter Finch, who played the father in the film of 1957, said it was one of the favourites of his career.
