SPENDER (Sir Stephen, 1909-1995, Poet & Critic)

Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Hamilton, saying he is afraid he has "nothing here in France, and my things are unobtainable from London", he is "grateful to be asked but sorry to be unhelpful", and asking him "By the way could you perhaps ask Mr Crook whether there was any answer to my enquiry about whether Sur le corps romanesque (Editions du Seuil Coll[ection] Pierre[s] Vives) by Roger Kempf is being reviewed by the T[imes] L[iterary] S[upplement]?", 1 side folio, Mas Saint Jérôme, Maussane, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, 10th August

Arthur Crook, (1912-2005), spent his whole working life at the TLS, 15 of them as editor, maintaining impeccable standards. Rarely writing himself, he had an unrivalled knowledge of who was the best reviewer for what.
Roger Kempf, (1927-2014), taught French in universities round the world. Among his interests was the role, both in history and in fiction, of the body and of manners, for example in his Dandies: Baudelaire et Cie(1977).
