About Sophie
EDEN
(Sir Anthony, Earl of Avon, 1897-1977, Prime Minister)
Typed Letter Signed to
Adrian BRUNEL
,
(1889-1958, Film Director and Writer), saying "It was good of you to write", Eden "had not thought for a moment" that Brunel "had anything to do with the photographers ... Both my wife and I greatly enjoyed our evening",. 1 side 4to, 17 Fitzhardinge Street, W.1., 5th June
blank left margin and verso a little sunned
Written 3 months before the outbreak of WW2.
Anthony Eden
had resigned as Foreign Secretary in February 1938, in protest at Chamberlain's policy, especially with regard to Mussolini, though he did not remain out of favour, and visited the USA and Roosevelt in December 1938.
Adrian Brunel
was a skilled film maker - two of his 'lost' silent films are on the British Film Institute's 'most wanted list'. He was a close friend of Leslie Howard, with whom he had worked from 1920 for several years, and would again in 'The First of the Few'. At the outbreak of war he was employed in
propaganda films
, and we think that he and Eden will have been discussing some such project as war loomed.
