Burgoyne served with distinction in the Mediterranean and the Peninsula, 1800-1814, and America, France and Portugal, 1814-1828. In the Crimean war he was sent to report on the Russian fortifications and was appointed to Raglan's staff, making valuable observations and contributions. After the war he remained an important commentator on military affairs and from 1865 was Constable of the Tower.
With an early U.S. 2 cent stamp, cancelled, on the verso.
