FURNISS (Harry, 1854-1925, Caricaturist for 'Punch' 1880-1894)

Fine Illustrated Autograph Letter Signed to Sir Henry LUCY (1843-1924, Journalist, author of the Essence of Parliament as 'Toby M.P.', Punch's observant dog), saying he has done "a small block of the mouse incident last Tuesday - . You see the Daily Graphic &c. treat it - so I have had to do a small fancy cut of Gorst and Toby introducing the mouse as a New Member", with a sketch of them doing so, and another of the scrimmage of reporters, arms and legs flying, rushing for "the Report of the Royal Commission", ending "in great haste", Alington, Dean Park, Bournemouth, 'Friday' no date, perhaps circa

Sir John Eldon Gorst, (1835-1916, Conservative M.P.) held various government posts but was frequently independent-minded. He served on the Royal Commission on Labour, 1891-1894, which may be the one referred to here. Furniss specialised in drawings from the Commons Gallery, which he worked into full-page illustrations in Essence of Parliament. He also illustrated Dickens and wrote 'Confessions of a Caricaturist', novels and humorous articles.
