Charming Late Hand-Coloured Engraved Portrait, a 'Royalty' plate from John Bell's monthly magazine for Ladies, La Belle Assemblée, showing her head and shoulders, three-quarter face, with a serene but thoughtful lowered gaze, wearing a grey plumed hat and shawl and showing the frills of her simple white cap and her white double collar, 8" x 5" in window mount 13" x 8", [London], no date but SOPHIE ?RE-MOUNT TO AVOID INKED NOTES ON VERSO

Beautifully engraved, probably by the French Jean-Alexandre Alais [or Allais, 1792-1850] and after a drawing by John Partridge (1789-1872). The magazine displayed the latest fashions from London and Paris. The 'Royalty' plates emphasised the personality of the sitter and their restrained good taste.
