Charming Hand-Coloured Engraved Portrait, a 'Royalty' plate from John Bell's monthly magazine for Ladies, La Belle Assemblée, showing her seated half-length, three-quarter face with a sweet smile, in a pale orange Regency dress, long white gloves, a diadem of jewelled flowers over her brown hair with two fetching curls on her brow immediately above a pearl circlet, and a necklace with Maltese cross pendant, 7½" x 5¼" in window mount 12¼" x 10", [London], no date but

Beautifully engraved by the French Jean-Alexandre Alais [or Allais, 1792-1850] after a drawing by John Partridge (1789-1872). The magazine displayed the latest fashions from London and Paris. The 'Royalty' plates emphasised the personality of the sitter and their restrained good taste.
1818 was the year of the 'race' to secure an heir to the throne. It was 'won' by Edward, Duke of Kent (1767-1820), who married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg on 11th July 1818.
