Charming Hand-Coloured Engraved Portrait, a 'Royalty' plate from John Bell's monthly magazine for Ladies, La Belle Assemblée, showing her seated half-length, three-quarter face with an alert pleased look in her eyes, wearing a pale purple Regency dress, long white gloves, an ostrich plume to one side of her brown hair with two fetching curls on her brow, and a simple pearl necklace, 7½" x 5¼" in window mount 12¼" x 10", [London], no date but

Beautifully engraved by the French Jean-Alexandre Alais [or Allais, 1792-1850] and after a drawing by John Partridge (1789-1872). The magazine displayed the latest fashions from London and Paris. The 'Royalty' plates emphasised the personality of the sitter and their restrained good taste.
1818 was the year of the 'race' to secure an heir to the throne. The Duke of Cambridge married Princess Augusta on 7th May in Cassel and 1st June in London. The race was 'won' by Edward, Duke of Kent (1767-1820), who married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg on 11th July 1818.
