LEOPOLDO (di Borbone, 1790-1851, Prince of Salerno, son of Ferdinando IV, 1751-1825, King of Naples and Sicily from 1759)

Autograph Letter Signed 'Your most affectionate and obedient and respectful son Leopoldo' in Italian with translation, to 'Dearest Papa', thanking him for "your dear letters of the 27th June and the 1st and 2nd July for which I am most grateful", hoping that "your health, precious as it is to me, intends to stay good" and enclosing a request "from the mother of Porfidio Amante", Lacco, Ischia, 8th July

At the time of this letter the French held the mainland kingdom of Naples but Ferdinand still had the islands, including Ischia only seven miles off the coast. Leopoldo was the formal head of the unfortunate Anglo-Bourbon expedition of 1809 in the gulf of Naples. The famous Duc d'Aumale married his daughter and paid off his debts, in return for removing Leopoldo's collection of old masters to Chantilly.
