KARL FRIEDRICH (1783-1853, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach from 1828)

Fine letter signed 'Charles Frédéric Grand-Duc de Saxe' in French with translation, to  FERDINAND II , (1810-1859, King of the Two Sicilies from 1830), saying that "It is with the greatest distress, that I undertake the heavy duty of announcing to Your Royal Majesty the decease of Her Highness the Duchess Ida of Saxe-Weimar", (1794-1852), "born Princess of Saxe-Meiningen, wife of my brother his Highness Duke Bernard of Saxe-Weimar", (1792-1862), trusting that the king "will share in this sad occasion" and adding his "most emphatic wishes that providence may ... preserve Your Royal Majesty ... from such grievous loss", 1 side folio on mourning paper with conjugate blank and original envelope with seal (worn), Weimar, 4th April

Karl Friedrich, pupil of Goethe, continued his father's work whereby Saxe-Weimar had become the cultural centre of Germany. His ideas, though liberal, did not advance fast enough for some, and the disturbances of 1848 brought in a popular ministry and many further reforms. Saxe-Weimar is the oldest branch of the Ernestine line and hence of the whole Saxon house.
