THOMPSON (Thomas Perronet, 1783-1869, General & Politician)

Autograph Letter Signed to Mr A. W. Bennett, complaining that although "the binder promised that copies should be here last night ... as I expected, nothing of the kind has been done. He has inflicted one of the greatest damages conceivable, by stopping the publication for a fortnight, after advertisements ... in England and America ... on the frivolous ground that in the metropolis of England he cannot procure materials for covering a pamphlet ... Seeing that there is no confidence to be placed in word given, I am under the necessity of requesting, that unless the publication can be put without delay ... the sheets in their existing state may be given up to me ...", 3 sides 8vo., Eliot Vale, Blackheath, 1st November some damage on bottom edge

Autograph Letter Signed to William Long, President of Bath General Hospital, saying "I have lived much in Society and have seen most of its Phases & I think I know & understand the Meaning of Party, but there is a Hostility about some of the Opposition to me I confess I cannot understand ... I have been pressed & am still, to contribute to the Benevolences of Bath (your great Hospital is a Case in point) & yet I am told that a considerable Sum has been raised by the Gentry & inferior Tradespeople to help the Uncle of one of the richest men in your County, to turn me out ... I really claim nothing on the Score of Gratitude" but he is "surprized by the Personality of this Opposition. I suppose ... I must take my Chance with the Politicians" but assures Long "how much I esteem your good Opinion", with original autograph envelope, 3 sides 8vo., 42 Lowndes Square, London, 4th June
