Fine Letter Signed, in French with translation, addressed “To my Brother and Cousin The King of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies”
saying that “it is with the deepest sorrow that I announce to Your Majesty the loss of the King, my beloved and most honoured Lord and Brother, who died in the morning of the 16th of this month, at 4. The feelings of pity which so particularly distinguished the august head of our house gave him the courage to bear with calm and resignation until his last moments the sufferings he had felt for so long. Your Majesty, who knew his eminent virtues and the tender affection he had for all the members of his family, can appreciate the just regrets that such a fatal event causes me. The attachment that Your Majesty has always shown me and the blood ties that unite us give me the confidence that I will find in Her heart the consolation that mine needs and that She will share my deep pain. I make wishes that divine providence may remove from your Majesty’s family anything which could afflict Him and these wishes are as sincere as the assurances of the high esteem and inviolable friendship with which I am held...”, 1 side 4to., on mourning paper, St Cloud, 20th September

saying he "received a letter from you last summer. It has given me great pleasure in proving to me that I am not outside the sphere of your remembrance and that you also remembered the once so happy times. You judge me, Madam, with the same sagacity of mind as in the past and yet time has had a wintry effect on this once poetical and ardent (fiery) heart. I would ask you to pardon the delay in my reply, but your request came at a moment when everything was at a standstill and it is only now that matters having become more settled that I am in a position to fulfil your wish, as I did not wish for a third person to be mixed up in this matter. I am glad that I have been able to help your son and I wish him all the best for the success of his talents. It is a pity that he has not become a soldier, it is the only calling where real glory can be gained and where one can think and act as a gentleman in spite of the materialism of our times. As for myself, I remain body and soul a soldier and I have only one wish which is to die on the battlefield and not in bed. I can see you smiling and saying to yourself 'he is still a madcap'. Well, I possess this madness and this hope, placing my destiny in the hands of Providence. Good-bye, Madam, I have chattered too much, but with you I have done it so often, that it has become second nature with me and overtakes me at a galloping pace. Album leaf signed and affectionately inscribed in English to Gertrude,
with sentiments on the 2 sides about Time (in German, 'The future draws slowly towards us, the present flies past like an arrow, the past stands still for ever'), and, in English, about Trust, Rashness and Youth, with 2 further leaves from Gertrude's album, including 1 side in German inscribed by Anna Popper, quoting Goethe and Rückert, and 1 side with the verses '... Trust in God, and do the right', signed A.M. Byng, also some delightful verses about the pupils soon to leave the 'Stiftung' (boarding school), founded by the Empress Augusta at Charlottenburg in 1872, and apparently in the hand of one of them, Monica Owen, headed "The old english Colony ... In this old Stift how happy we ... And now all go and leave but me / In Brandenburg's sandy heather", recalling "the park, the Schlosses towers / The Flora, the dirty Spree" and "the stove so large and white / where many a pleasant english chat / our sorrows put to flight !", ending "our dear old 'Colony' ", Gertrude has added in pencil the names of 10 pupils including herself, then describes the verses as "Spontaneous combustion of Miss M. Owen, aided by devoted friends", with a pictorial notice showing the school, the path down to the river, the chapel and the Empress' simple room, in an elaborate border, together 7 sides 8vo., Neues Palais, Potsdam and Charlottenburg, no date. and 8th - 13th June
the view of the school laid down and a little torn, but with minimal loss
