WARREN (Sir Herbert, 1854-1930, President of Magdalen College, Oxford 1885-1928)

Typed letter signed to Mrs. M.C. Strachey, saying he has wanted to write to her "to tell you how very specially I like and enjoy your little volume 'Sketches in Verse' ", for "its classical finish. The themes are much to my mind, but the treatment is even more so. The blending too of Rome and London, of the Latin lands and seas with Somerset, has a special attraction for me ... for instance 'The Manor House' and 'Tivoli' side by side, make a peculiarly delicious blend", withan obituary notice of Warren from the 'Spectator', 14th June 1930, "As an undergraduate he was ... a brilliant classical scholar ... When he became Professor of Poetry ... he astonished many persons who had not been aware of the wideness of his reading or the power of his enthusiasm", the letter 1 side 4to., Magdalen College, 21st February, light traces of old transparent tape in blank margins
