Autograph Letter in the Third Person to Viscount CROMER, (Sir Evelyn BARING, 1841-l917, 'the maker of modern Egypt', 1st Earl, 1901), from 1883 to 1907 British Agent, Consul-General and Minister Plenipotentiary in Egypt), with transcription, thanking him "very much for his last letter of the 11th Nov." and again expressing "her great satisfaction at Sir R. Wyngate's [Wingate's] great success". (against the Mahdist state in the Sudan, ending on 25th November 1899 with the defeat and death of the Mahdi Khalifa), "It was an unlooked for event & the best ending to the Mahdi Kalifa's power; little as that was after Omdurman", she is sure that "Lord Cromer is following the serious war in Africa with interest. It is an anxious time. The Troops have fought splendidly but the losses have been very sad, especially in Officers", and ending "Lord Cromer must feel more & more the loss of his dear wife who shared everything so truly & helpfully with him", with the original autograph envelope to him in Cairo as "H.I. Consul-General". the letter 3 sides 8vo black-edged, Windsor Castle, 6th December a few short tears in envelope on opening
