JACKSON
(J., of Camberwell)
Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Bennet,
sending "the fragment of Sallust [not present]" from the preface to the "Bellum Catilinarium", which, "however feeble the translation", exemplifies "the Stoical doctrines. The beauty of Virtue, & the efficacy of Science are the objects of a glowing panegyric", he also sends "the two first volumes of Shakespeare containing all the prefaces of his editors" among which that of Dr Johnson "is a masterly production glowing in every paragraph with sound judgement, nervous expressions & acute investigations", he contrasts those of Theobald, Pope and Warburton, he continues "When I reflect on your situation I realy pity you ... since social conversation is denied you", and talks of the sources of happiness sought by different people, his own view is "extend [man's] sphere of reflection, & you extend his sphere of pleasure in the same ratio ... I need not make an application of what I have written above, you can do it" but "if the correspondence of a devotee of literature ... can afford you any pleasure, I shall be happy to give you that pleasure", 3 sides 4to., 5 Denmark Row, Camberwell, 9th July
