HOWES
(Frank Stewart, 1891-1974, 'Times' Music Critic)
3 Autograph Letter Signed to Harold Chipp, of the Cheltenham Gramophone Society,
suggesting that if he "offered Folk Song I could produce some unusual records" but they might not appeal "to gramophone fans", he mentions several other possibilities, "most of my suggestions have cut across 'simple categories'", he makes records "entirely subservient to ideas" (23rd February 1962), on Beethoven he would "take the three periods, use Prometheus" and other illustrations of the first, "then something from the third" and in between "discuss his psychology" (27th June 1962), "Your copies may be better than mine ... This is my list which contains a number of 78s, some rather worn ... When I retired from The Times & London I gave to the Institute of Recorded Sound over a thousand 78s & I kept quite as many ... I have been astonished .. how many ... have not been replaced on LP & are therefore indispensable" (15th September 1962), 4 sides 4to and 2 sides 8vo, Newbridge Mill, Standlake, Oxfordshire, 23rd February-15th September
