RICHARDS
(Sir George Henry, 1820-1896, Admiral, Hydrographer to the British Admiralty)
Pair of Autograph Letters Signed to his friend ALLCHIN
(Sir William Henry, 1846-1912, Physician) the first saying that he "will only now thank you for kindly writing to me on Shuter's case and we hope most earnestly to hear favourable news tomorrow. Of course I know you could not say more but what you do so gives us hope. It was a sad piece of news we got from Dickens last night ... Shuter's cheerfulness is a good symptom, of course the prospect of being relieved from such a distressing state of things to a man with a well balanced mind is very encouraging even while recognising the risks which we all know must exist ...", 3 sides 8vo., Kittery Court, 2rd August and the second thanking him for his card and saying his mind "is relieved as to Shuter ... thank you very much for your kind sympathy with us in this awful trouble ... I never knew what a terrible trial it is to lose a dear child ...", 3 sides 8vo., Atheneum headed paper, 8th October

SABINE
(Sir Edward, 1788-1883, General, Astronomer with Ross & Parry on Arctic Expeditions, President of the Royal Society)
Fine Long Letter Signed to Mrs Miller
saying it is good of her to "wish us to pay you a longer visit, and we should be but too happy to meet your kind wishes. I must attend Lord Rosses' Soirees on the 3rd & 17th and Mr Owen's lecture on the 8th and the B. Assoc. Council ... But I think I can manage to postpone both Council of the R.S. and Committee on the Govt Grant till after the 17th which would set us free to accompany Mr Miller back to Cambridge ... and remain to the afternoon of the 17th ... we shall hold ourselves accordingly engaged unless you write us word of any changes and perhaps Mr Miller will be able to connect with us how we may know the time of his return ... and join him by a particular train and the Station. I have had the pleasure of writing this letter to you because Mrs Sabine said it was my duty. She has been more particular in shifting such little responsibilities upon - what she calls - the right shoulders to bear them, since (in accordance with the act of Parliament to that effect) I ventured in the Census paper to write myself down as 'Head of the Family'. May all my acts of headship be equally agreeable with the present! ...", 4 sides 8vo., Woolwich, 25th April
