FLEMING
(Sir Alexander, 1881-1955, Scottish Bacteriologist, Discoverer of Penicillin)
Important Typed Letter Signed to Wallace W. McEwen,
a member of the Science Department of the Nottingham and District Technical College saying that he has “much pleasure in sending you the Foreword to your book ‘Bacteriological Technique.’ I hope you will think it is worthy of the book. I read through most of this with considerable interest but I have a very serious misfortune to report to you. The first galley which you sent is somehow mislaid. I should have sent the whole thing back a fortnight ago, but I have spent the last fortnight looking for it without any success. I have no doubt you will be able to get a copy but it means you will have to correct it all over again. I sincerely regret this carelessness on my part. One small matter, inoculation is spelt [sic] with only one ‘n’...”, 1 side A4, Wright-Fleming Institute of Microbiology, St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, 20th May 1949, together with a typed letter signed from J. Rivers, Managing Director of J & A Churchill, to McEwen concerning “the publication by this Company of your book on Bacteriological Technique... It would, I think, be a considerable asset, and add to the selling potentialities.. if you could get a recognised authority, such as a Professor at one of the Universities to write a Foreword...”, an Autograph Letter to Fleming thanking him for his time and saying that he has “received copies of the Galley proofs of the first few pages of the book and, as you suggested, I am forwarding one for your perusal...”, and a typed copy of the Foreword, 10th June 1948 to 20th May
