HARRISON
(Jane Ellen, 1850-1928, English Classical Scholar, Linguist and Anthropologist)
Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Clarke,
thanking her for an invitation and saying “that she is “so very sorry that I am engaged for that night. It would have been a great pleasure to me to see the lantern exhibition, as it is a question I am much interested in & I hear Mr Clarke is a great authority. I scarcely like to invite such severe criticism as yours would necessarily be but if you had time to look in at my - I fear very inferior - lantern show at S. Kensington, I should be greatly pleased. My slides are made by a semi-professional who devotes immense care to his work...”, 3 sides 8vo., 45d Colville Gardens, 29th December

HARTLEY
(James, of Leicester)
Autograph Letter Signed to Alfred Ellis, 1821-1879,
second son of John Ellis (Chairman of the Midland Railway), of Belgrave, Leicestershire, saying "My medical advisers have just been here ... I suppose I must obey virtually their instructions, and take freely 'Brandy' ... to enable me to overcome the encroachments of water, and the certitude of aqueous humour centered in my limbs ... consequently you must not expect to have me for a companion at the 'Brande' ", he wishes him well on his tour of Scotland, "What would I not give to hear once more the long drawn whistle or revallie of the Golden Plover - the plaint of the Curlew - and the hardy accents of the Brown Ptarmigan" and exhorting him "to catch the spirit of Him who failed not to notice the beautiful tracery, and exquisite finish of the lily of the field", 4 sides 8vo., Leicester, 31st July

HASTINGS
(Lady Elizabeth, 1682-1739, Benefactor and Philanthropist)
Fine Document signed
appointing George Stead of Wetherby as gamekeeper for the " Manors of Thorparch Collingham ... in the County of York to look after and take care to preserve the Game there and to also allow in my name full and free Liberty License and Authority to hunt hawk fish and fowl within my manors aforesaid for my use from time to time...", 1 side folio, Leadstone, 9th September 1738, a few years later, after the death of Lady Elizabeth, the deed was used as a basis for a later grant of the same office, by W.G. of Skelton in the North Riding to George Stead for Thorp Arch only in 1748. The grant therefore has some corrections and words added but the original remains clear, save for the two manor names, the signature of Lady Hastings is unaffected, on the second page there is an endorsement by Thomas Pulleyn, Clerk of the Peace for West Riding, that this game warrant was registered in the records of the Sessions of the Peace on 4th October
