THE QUEEN PLEADS FOR CONSENT TO THE MARRIAGE OF HER CORRESPONDENT’S DAUGHTER
CHARLOTTE SOPHIA
(1744-1818, of Mecklenburg Strelitz, Queen of George III)
Fine Autograph letter signed ”Charlotte” to Lady Carpenter
saying that the “uneasy situation of Your Daughter Lady Egremont makes me take the step of writing to you. Her extreme affection for you & filial Duty makes Her incapable to open to You what I therefore have undertaken. Indeed I am anxious to see Her peace of mind restored. Lady Egremont has undoubtedly fixed Her affections on Count Bruhl, a Gentleman of a very antient family in Saxony who is much valued by those that know him for his very Religious & Moral conduct, besides his good Education & who in every point is esteemed a man of Honour. He has fortune enough to live affluently in his own Country, therefore cannot be accused of being influenced by Interested motives to have made his addresses, but those that know your Daughter must confess he has a more honorable reason, the Hopes of being more happy with so Amiable a Woman, perhaps his good example may be of some use to Her Children. I know Lady Egremont tho much attached to him, cannot be happy without she has your approbation & has therefore prevailed on me to open my Sentiments to you on this affair, & I may add those of the King...”, 1 side 4to., Queen’s House, 16th April
