LAVELLE (A., Mayor of Orléans)

LS, in French with translation, to 'My dear Senator', assuring "Miss Murray that every facility will be accorded her to allow her to offer to Jeanne d'Arc a sheaf of flowers in the colours of England. This gesture, instinct with such delicacy, will be greatly appreciated by the inhabitants, [and] by the Municipal body", and expressing "to her all our thanks", 1 side 8vo., Mayor's Office, Orléans, 5th May

Jeanne d'Arc was canonized in St. Peter's on Sunday, 16th May 1920. In fact, owing to widespread strikes at the time, the French police forbade processions in many towns, even in Rouen, and the flowers at her statues were then her chief tribute.
