MAXIMILIAN (Maria Joseph, 1759-1838, Prince of Saxony)

Autograph Letter Signed ('Massimiliano') in Italian, with translation, to Signor Ferrari, thanking him for his New Year wishes and telling him that the "news which your letter contains has given me the greatest pleasure ...", 1 side 8vo., Dresden, 5th (January)

Maximilian was a younger brother of the first two kings of Saxony. On 11th December 1806 Saxony had made peace with Napoleon, who gave the Elector the title of King.
In 1830 riots led to the promise of a new constitution, but as Maximilian, now next in line, was already 71, it was thought advisable for him to renounce the succession in favour of his more liberal son, which he did on 13th September. His son became regent and later Frederick Augustus II.
