BLACKIE (John Stuart, 1809-1895, Scottish Scholar & Translator of Goethe's Faust)

Fine signature with several words in Greek, on a card, no place, no date

The three phrases only make sense separately. The left three words mean
"speaking the truth in a spirit of love" (alluding to NT Eph.4.15.1), the
right three words "fine things are difficult" (a saying attributed to Solon
and quoted by Plato and Plutarch among others) and the bottom two "farewell
forever" (the two words never occur in this order, but in the reverse they
are found in the NT).
