Background
This letter is is extremely likely to be addressed to the zoologist/physiologist William Benjamin CARPENTER, F.R.S. (1813-1885), who was a colleague and frequent correspondent of Huxley. Carpenter makes several appearances in the multi-volume Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, which was edited by his son Leonard.
