Background
This letter may well concern Yeats’s illustrator Austin Osman SPARE (1886-1956), who was a Londoner and, like Yeats, interested in spiritual paths that ranged quite far beyond mainstream religiosity. The timeframe fits as well. Spare illustrated Yeats’s book Eight Poems (London: Morland Press, 1916), and a few years later, in the late 1910s and early 1920s, Yeats was at the address of this letter, 4 Broad Street, Oxford. That would be enough time for the illustrator to have lost track of his author, and to need an intermediary to track him down.
