HOWITT
(Mary, née Botham, 1799-1888, Authoress and wife of William, 1792-1879)
Fine Autograph letter signed to “My dear Miss Fellowes”
saying she “was so very sorry to see by your card that you had left Esher - It was quite a painful surprise. We were prevented from going to your Studio on the evening we had intended to do so by the visit of an unlooked for friend, & on Sunday evening I did not go to church because my husband wished me to make a call with him on an acquaintance in Esher. I wish we had only known that you were leaving so soon... However our kind, good wishes go with you, & when you come next to Esher you must be sure to let us know. I return you Mr Rich’s letter which is a very nice, manly letter & I am heartily glad of it. I shall now, if any opportunity occurs of helping him not fail to do so. I am really heartily thankful when people turn out well, when they do not reject one’s little efforts to serve them. - or make them an ill returns...”, 3 sides 8vo., The Orchard, Esher, 23rd June no year circa

HOWITT REFERS TO DICKENS AND ‘HOUSEHOLD WORDS’
HOWITT
(William, 1792-1879, Author, husband of Mary, 1799-1888)
Autograph Letter Signed to G. F. PARDON
(1824-1884, journalist and author), telling him that they “do not object to the publication of our names as general contributors to your journal, but we shall prefer that the articles we send, should appear without the names, except in some particular cases, as is the custom with the Household Words, and that we shall retain the right to reprint any of our articles, as we do with Dickens, in any future collection into a volume. This prevents our names being always before the public, and makes any reprint fresh. I enclose you an article which I was destining for another quarter, by this same post. ‘Magister Tinnus and his Hommer’[?]... Like everybody else we are going out of town for a few weeks but our letters, proofs etc will be duly posted to us...”, 3 sides 8vo., The Hermitage, Kentish Town Hill, 4th September no year but circa

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs MEIGGS
saying he has “had the misfortune to promise to go the houses of two friends, far apart, on Sunday next, after drinks; but I shall not fail to do my best to turn up in Cromwell Road, if I can achieve it at a decorous hour. If I am worsted in this effort please believe that it will not have been for want and true good will to see Mrs Francis before she leaves England. Please to give her this remembrance, with my kindest regards...”, 3 sides 8vo., 34 de Vere Gardens, 4th April no year
